How do you take a cluttered six-page flyer and make it clear, concise, and impactful? That was my challenge while redesigning the BCW Commercial Organic Mailer.

I streamlined the content into a single-page layout while keeping readability, accessibility, and brand consistency. The final design was translated into 15 languages, printed, and distributed citywide.

The BCW department needed to condense a 4-fold commercial organic mailer flyer into a more efficient, single-page (front and back) format while maintaining clarity, accessibility, and adherence to DSNY branding guidelines. The redesigned flyer was intended for mass distribution, translated into 15 languages, and mailed to commercial establishments.

Problem Statement

The original six-page flyer was too lengthy and inefficient for commercial recipients who needed clear, actionable information. The redesign aimed to:

  • Improve readability and visual hierarchy.

  • Maintain all critical content in a condensed format.

  • Align with DSNY’s branding while ensuring accessibility.

  • Support multilingual translation for broader reach.

Research & Content Analysis

  • Reviewed the original 4-fold flyer to identify redundant content.

  • Analyzed key messaging and essential information for prioritization.

  • Discussed constraints and requirements with the senior designer and BCW director.

Ideation & Layout Exploration

  • Created three initial layout concepts, focusing on:

    • Hierarchical structuring for better readability.

    • Visual elements (icons, typography, and spacing) for clarity.

    • Content grouping to maximize efficiency.

  • Presented designs in internal meetings for feedback.

Design Refinement & Finalization

  • Incorporated feedback from the senior designer and BCW director.

  • Finalized the selected layout, optimizing spacing, typography, and color balance.

  • Ensured alignment with DSNY’s branding guidelines.

Translation & Production

  • Adapted the final design for translation into 15 languages.

  • Individually assisted in translating the Simplified Chinese version to ensure accuracy and clarity.

  • Collaborated with the print and distribution team for mass mailing.
